In mangroves there is life
Posted: 25 February 2002
In 2001 children from 12 countries took part in an Art and Poetry contest organised by the Mangrove Action Project. The aim was to create awareness among children (in mangrove countries)about mangrove ecosystems and their protection. Over 4,500 children took part. Here, we publish with kind permission, two of the winning poems and pictures.
The Mangroves
In my home live the happy animals, the crabs, the shellfishIn my home, the flying fish like to jumpIn my home, birds love to rest in the treesIn my home, man finds good things to eatIn my home, all this little world lives happily
I protect the lagoons against the mountains I protect the little ones against big predatorsI protect the people against the angry waves
Then the children must help me against the wrong-doer Who pollutes me, poisons me, contaminates me and destroys me.That makes me very sick
Then the children must help me to surviveBe my messengerTeach them to love me, respect me, protect meI would love to be everybody's friend.
