Under the Incas, the slopes of the Peruvian Andes supported twice as many people as today. The explanation lies in a complex irrigation system that fell into disuse after the European conquest....but not entirely.
Modern engineers working with the ancestors of the Incas are rehabilitating the canals. Harvests have increased threefold and in the process the indigenous people have renewed their pride in an ancient culture.
