Holding up the HimalayasPosted: 02 May 2001
The Himalayas experience some of the highest rates of erosion in the world, made worse by widespread deforestation. The resulting landslides endanger life, cause disruption and damage property.
Holding up the Himalayas explores a technique to stablise slopes which combines civil engineering with ecology. Bioengineering utilises living vegetation in a variety of engineering solutions to bind the soil and prevent erosion.
