peopleandplanet.net provides a global review and internet gateway into the issues of population, poverty, health, consumption and the environment. It is published by Planet 21, an independent non-profit company and a registered British charity recognised by the United Nations.
Launched in September 2000, this website replaced People & the Planet, the acclaimed quarterly international magazine. Planet 21 will continue to publish Special Reports on topical themes from time to time. Planet 21 also produces videos and assists in the publication of occasional books.
The work of peopleandplanet.net reflects the independence and authority of our five major sponsors and associated non-governmental organisations (see Our Partners).
Our sponsors are the United Nations Population Fund, the World Conservation Union, the World Wide Fund for Nature International, the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the Swedish Development Co-operation Agency.

Planet 21 people
This website is being developed under the overall editorial direction of John Rowley, an award-winning writer and editor with wide international experience. He founded Planet 21 as a UN-recognised NGO in 1992 and has since been Editor-in-Chief of publications, films and Internet operations for the organisation. These activities included the quarterly People & the Planet magazine, launched at the Earth Summit in Rio.
Associate Editor is Jeremy Hamand, a freelance author and journalist. A former head of publications with the International Planned Parenthood Federation he has a special interest in international family planning, health and women's development issues. He has also worked for specialist publications dealing with the environment and with AIDS, and worked as a speechwriter in these fields.
Assistant Editor, Maya Pastakia, graduated in International Relations at the London School of Economics. She worked for broadasting and educational trusts before joining Planet 21.
Contributing Editors are:
Dr Norman Myers, the award-winning environmental scientist and author of 17 books on environmental issues, including forests and biodiversity. A Visiting Fellow of Green College, Oxford, he pioneered the concept of biodiversity hotspots and has produced ground-breaking studies on environmental security and perverse subsidies.
Paul Harrison, the widely-travelled author of Inside the Third World and The Third Revolution, and co-author with John Rowley of Human Numbers Human Needs. He has also written numerous reports for the UN Population Fund and other agencies, and is co-author of the recent AAA Atlas of the Population and Environment, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Paul Harrison was honoured with UNEP Global 500 award in 1998.
Don Hinrichsen, a senior consultant with the UN Population Fund and former editor of Ambio magazine. Don Hinrichsen is author of Coastal Waters of the World and co-author of the Atlas of the Environment. He has travelled widely to report on population and environment programmes and projects.
